It is a story about love, friendship, grief and healing. It is about a writer who adopts a Great Dane that belonged to a deceased friend and mentor. While most authors do not like the film adaptation of her book, Sigrid Nunez has stated that she is happy with the way her book is presented in this film adaptation. Seen at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 11, 2024 (first showing). Format: Regular Cinema. The story does not know which direction it is going in, which is why most of the time it just keeps going and feels like it will never end, and here comes the part where the viewer feels the length and weight of the runtime, which is not even long but feels that way due to the slow and sometimes boring rhythm of the story. The dog is definitely the best part of the film. The way he has been trained to show these emotions and use his body language to communicate something is very impressive. I didn’t really like the way the story handled Bill Murray’s character as it seemed very useless to me. To me, the film is more of a story between a dog and a grieving person rather than about a suicidal writer who died and left a dog behind. In that regard, it seemed very messy to me and could have easily gone deeper on that topic or shown a flashback supporting Bill Murray’s character. Other than that, nothing special but overall a sweet and warm film to watch!
